If you are looking for an interesting menu and a kitschy atmosphere this is the place for you. This is a Indian, BBQ place. Dressed up like a voodoo place, you enter to see a coffin with iced down bottles of beer in it and are told to select what you want. Neat and fun little way to get your beer. The menu is mostly BBQ with some curry dishes and salads and wraps mixed in. I chose the pulled pork plate which came with veggie fried rice (creole) and your choice of two sides. No French fries here! I had BBQ baked beans and candied yams. All was delicious. My husband and I shared a salad with BBQ sauce dressing which was delicious! The bread they brought to the table was garlic bread but not very garlicky or buttery at all. I was disappointed by that. The wait staff is very nice and attentive. I would eat there again.

Mr.Bones I'm speechless! Great service , wide variety of beers.(love Turbodog)the beer featured in the show TruBlood on HBO. I recommend the Big beef plate or the ribs hands down the best in Anna Maria! Definitely should be on Man vs Food or just Travel channel in general . Love the coffin full of bottled beers, definitely have to buy a t-shirt!

Had to downgrade this place after our last visit in March 2015. Nothing was very good. There were four of us and we all ordered different dishes. The ribs were nothing special nor very tender. The Indian dishes I usually really enjoy here were only so-so too. Hope it was just because it was during Spring Break but we've been other years during high season and haven't had the same experience.

Don't let the outside fool you - this place has amazing food! The interior design and music is a little weird but the food makes up for everything - so good! Would totally recommend the BBQ ribs and chicken, as well as the pulled pork. They do not have mixed drinks, you pick your beer out of an ice tub.

The service is best on the island but the food is a little weird. Not sure what they are going for at Mr. Bones. The food rates about a 3 and service a 5. Give it a try maybe it's right down your alley.

Ate here today for lunch, had the veggie burger w/potato salad, my other half had the pulled BBQ pork. Veggie burger made w quinoa and lentils base w peppers, carrots in the mix, rubbed w their own spice rub, nice kick! Huge burger served on their own onion kaiser, yum! BBQ pork according to my carnivore boy was sweet and delish w veg fried rice great full flavor done just right w good sized portions. We also had key lime pie which had a yummy surprising swirl of raspberry that played nicely on my tongue and peanut butter brownie to go, rich awesome flavors all around! Lunch was $40-ish for two not bad good quality service with a friendly smile! Def would go back to try some more!!! A nice variety for us vegetarians not just your average veggie selections like the usual salad or burrito..fun menu cozy dining room with lots of art to enjoy around you.

I'm an odd person so this place was perfect for me. Our server was rude and hilarious! The environment was like walking into a voodoo shop! I got the Philly cheesesteak with potato salad. Delicious except for the steak. Although it was perfectly cooked it was a bit bland and was overpowered by the veggies. Other than that it was a great place and not my last visit. Though I would suggest if you can't handle a server with a spicy attitude or a "scary" scenery then this isn't ur dive.

Went on the Internet to the website to see if they were open and it was listed that they were. Turned up after a fairly long drive to a closed restaurant. Very disappointing and a complete waste of time. If you are not going to be open on (Columbus day) any particular day then the website should reflect this to save people time and money.

First of all, CALL AHEAD AND GET CARRYOUT if you are getting dinner anywhere near the weekend! This place is small and gets SLAMMED. Really nice server there during lunch. The shrimp and grits is SOOO good. The sausage sandwich was awesome, good heat! Chicken Tikki dish is great. Believe it or not, I haven't had the BBQ but when I do, I'll report. I'm not sure I get the reviews saying "they're rude and don't give a damn" because our server was super cool, always smiling, etc.

I've been coming here for a while, and the thing with Mr . Bones is you either love it or your just so so about it. I personally love it. Many a rained out fishing trip has ended here with a beer and ribs. The menu is eclectic with BBQ, Indian, and creole all sharing space. You can't call it a BBQ joint, it's just a badass little hole in the wall that doesn't care what you think. From time to time I do think they slip here an there on the food quality. Sometimes I go and it's fresh and awesome, sometimes it's a little flat. 3 things of note: try the Mongolian baby backs!, try the Julius Escher beer (it's in the coffin), and this is the only place around where u can get a fountain RC cola. Enjoy!!

Good food - the tamari roasted veggies were great (but not all that filling). Vegan black bean burger was good, too.

So we went back, it had been a few years and friends in the area told us they loved the place. The only thing I can think of is that our friends don' know good BBQ because as before it was meh! They had changed up the menu and added a lot more type of food Indian(at a BBQ joint). Ok, but Ribs no so good this time, hey even messed up our bill. Maybe the Indian food is better but the ribs... are just average to below average. Go somewhere else on the island.

Place was small and funky. Parking at dinner scarce. Restaurant full and a promised 45 minute wait turned into only 15 minutes. Since we were handed cold beers out of an icefilled coffin we didn't mind the wait anyway. Smoked ribs with choices of sauce, chicken and indian dirty rice. Wonderfully prepared, generous portions and reasonable WHATS NOT TO LOVE??? Service was great We'll be baaaack

Really broad spectrum menus with blends if Indian, Mexican, Asian, American and everything in between. All very unique and flavorful and a pretty good prices for a tourist area. I have been going to this place for 15 years and I still love the chicken Tika and to grab a beer from the coffin !

Extremely flavorful menu, great beer selection, and very laid-back vibe. We took our two young kids there. The kids menu is reasonably priced and has some unique items (ribs) along with the staples (Mac and cheese). What some might call "creepy" decor, our boys called "cool". It was great that it kept them interested while my wife and I enjoyed two truly memorable dishes. She had the chicken tikka, and I had the shrimp and grits with bacon. Both were absolutely delicious. We had a chance to discuss the restaurant while we waited--they were busy and we waited a while to order and for food. Here's our take: Don't go here if you are in a hurry or if you want a true Southern BBQ menu. This place has suffered from low reviews due to its deviation from traditional BBQ (and possibly its unconventional decor), but their food is excellent. Plus, they get points for the response of "help yourself" when I asked if I could get a second beer.

This place is just plain nasty. I made the mistake of going here with my family and let me tell you we will never be going back. Besides the bizarre menu, rude hostess, and dark atmosphere, the place wasn't even clean! Took a little peak into the kitchen and I swear I saw a little black mold on one of the walls, are you serious? There are plenty of other great restaurants in the area, you don't need to waste your time and money at this dump.

What a great surprise! Recommended by the desk at Haley's Motel and definitely did not disappoint. Not fancy or stuffy but, great, friendly and knowledgable service w amazing food. Would definitely come back!

Have eaten here several times on annual visits to Holmes Beach..on Anna Maria Island/key. Nice change of pace from the ubiquitous fish houses. Good, but not exceptional BBQ with lots of cold beer & good sides. Very popular this time of year so best to arrive before usual meal times And yes, we noted the Indian dishes........but eating BBQ is enough of a heresy to eat at a beach restaurant.

    (3)
  • Debra O.

We had two different chicken (honey BBQ and Mandarin)..both were excellent, Also had each of the sides, again yummy. Great for carry out to watch the beautiful sunset. Good food and very reasonably priced!

Been coming here for 25 years. Love the food, reasonable prices, nice wait staff. Always go for lunch for the burgers and cold beer from the coffin

This place is wonderful! Everything from the "NO SALT or PEPPER, F-OFF, WE KNOW WHAT WE'RE DOING" sign to the eclectic curry-inspired Indian & down-home southern BBQ infusion that I've never had the pleasure of seeing before to the fan-freakin'-tastic coffin full of ice & beer, I love it! My personal favorite, from back in the day, is no longer on the menu (bring back the Ghengis Khan chicken!!) but I had Mongolian Ribs (smothered in a great Peking sauce)... BBQ ribs w/ indian/asian infused sauce-- FANTASTIC!! The sides are great! Whatever you get... GET the candied yamms! Awesome! My son had the honey-glazed ribs & he loved them. A great, great & unique place in a sleepy, touristy beach town! Don't upgrade the rice, it no better & a few bucks extra, other than that, this place RULES!! ...can't wait to go back!

Wasn't too impressed. Not that it was bad. BBQ pork sandwhich was good but I could Make it better with a thing of Sweet Baby Rays sauce. Baked beans were terrible. They had this burnt smokey pure sugar flavor. I wanted so badly to ask fora little mustard on the beans to give it more substance but you can't ask for it. Garlic bread was good but then again something I could make easily

  • Dave H.

Great find! Numerous vegetarian and vegan options (finding a spot in FL that even knows the difference between vegetarian and vegan is a miracle...usually when I say I'm vegetarian the waiter lists all the fish and chicken dishes), as well as some fairly famous BBQ (the sauce is on sale in markets in NYC), be prepared for some whacky decor, serve yourself beer, and as for salt, pepper or ketchup, as the man says, "don't even ask!"

    (4)
  • Jack B.

Had this place recommended for a long while, happened to be in area and decided to have lunch. Hailing from a bar-b-q mecca we had high expectations and were sorely disappointed. Boiled, baked and tossed on a grill then washed in sauce is not Q. Sides lacked flavor. Our whole crew gave it very low scores. We would not dine there again.

  • Eva P.

I wasn't expecting the Indian stuff on the menu, the menu items are pretty non-traditional for what you'd think of a BBQ joint. I've tried a lot of pulled pork, and this just wasn't my style. It's kind of a creepy little place (coffins and stuff), but the owner is very nice. The reason I haven't gone back is just that I didn't really enjoy the food (kind of a big deal)...

    (2)
  • Patrick J.

There's a sign that prominently tells you not to ask for ketchup, salt, or pepper. "Our food is expertly prepared by New Orleans trained chefs." No restaurant is good enough to override individual preferences, but even if one were, this is not it. While the ribs were good, the shrimp fried rice was incredibly bland.

  • Sandra A.

This place is a "dive". But I must say that this place serves exactly what it's name promises: "Bones". We ordered Baby back ribs, ( more bone then meat) for almost $18. This meal was not worth the money.

    (1)
  • Casey H.

Kids got the veg rice and 5 wing chick... easily enough for two kids under 9. Mine are pick eaters too so this says a lot. I had the Bones salad with some extra chicken- very filling. Wife had the ribs and chicken combo was really good too. To top if off we had the peanut butter brownie desert. In all, the price was better than most. Kids means were $3.99 and included the desert (ice cream).

    (4)
  • William S.

Went there due to some local reviews. Which they had no stars. Baby back ribs dry and over cooked service slow and had didn't care attitude. Some reviews on other sites say don't ask for condiments, this is straight off their menu. Yellow pages reviews are from someone associated with this dump. Small seating so long waits and not enough benches for waiting on tables. Place is old and run down.

  • Jennifer M.

The food was good but the menu seemed limited. We thought it was fairly priced but the service was kind of slow.

Great pulled pork sandwich. Get a side of hot sauce to add on top too--it was delicious.

    (4)
  • Coty S.

I was really not impressed with their food, especially for the price that they charge for it. It was very stupid of me to order the Masala here, knowing that it would not taste like it should. It just tasted like canned tomato sauce on frozen veggies. The only memorable thing was actually not the BBQ either, it was the pineapple coleslaw. If I am trapped on the island again and really craving BBQ, then maybe I will give this place another try. But, hopefully I will never have to. They do not let you use salt, what a joke.

    (2)
  • Kathryn L.

Mmmm, I love me some Mr. Bones. We went back twice, which, in itself, is a testament to the quality of their bbq ribs. Coleslaw was also awesome. To all the complainers out there, order the ribs. The name really is Mr. Bones BBQ, not Mr. Bones weird thing vegetarian. Everything else is on your shoulders - especially if you order some weird vegetarian rice option at a place that specializes in ribs...

  • Malia D.

    Yummy food and quick service!

  • Chris S.

I also ordered the ribs here and they were burnt to a crisp and over sauced. Honestly I have cooked better BBQ on my Foreman Grill in college. I could not have been more disappointed with this meal. It took us roughly an hour to get our BBQ and instead of sending back the food I figured I would cut my losses and never come back here. The server was overwhelmed and I felt a bit sorry for him but he also should have caught those awful ribs he served to me. I will never come back here again.

  • Stephen O.

Food was ok, probably not as good as they think it is ... but passable. Ambiance is a bit cramped and we were seated in the back within eye-shot of the ice machine, utility area; which was noisy, bright (lit with utilitarian fluorescent lighting), as well as noticeably unclean. We could see under the ice machine which had clearly not been subject to a thorough cleaning in some time. We did enjoy the coffin in front which offered a wide variety of bottled beverages as we waited ... and helped ourselves.

While visiting last week, I had the opportunity to eat at Mr. Bones. I had the BBQ ribs which were so outstanding, I dont know if any here in Chicago can compare! My husband had the jumbalaya which he also raved about. I defintely would eat there again and will look into having some of those ribs with the secret spice shipped to me.

Mr. Bones is a great little joint on Anna Maria Island. It's specialities are barbecue ribs along with Mexican and Indian dishes. I've had their ribs with both regular BBQ sauce and Mongolian style duck sauce. Both delicious. The ribs come with two sides and garlic bread. Portions are generous and the prices are reasonable. There are only two waitresses but they do a fantastic job. Plus you can pick your beer out of an actual coffin. A great place recomended for anyone visting Anna Maria Island.

  • Chris L.

Great place, great food, great service. One of the top give burgers I have ever had. Beers in a coffin, can't go wrong. It was so good the first time that we went back again. I got the BBQ Chicken the second time, that was also great, but the burger was really special. Beers are also cheap for the area. Definitely worth stopping in.

  • Doc M.

Terrific BBQ and Cajun. If you are in the mood for that, just go. You won't be disappointed. All kinds of ribs, wings and chicken. Chefs are NOLA-trained so there Is good Gumbo and Jambalaya too. There is a tired server that brings the attentiveness meter down, but don't let that sour you. Beer selection is terrific. My suggestion is to add wine, baked potatoes and Mac and cheese to the menu and you'll have it just right Mr. B!

  • Kerry S.

    1. Walk in and grab a beer out of the coffin. Forget about the kitsch factor, they have GREAT beer. I usually go for the Rogue Dead Guy Ale (seems appropriate) or an Anchor Steam. 2. Hopefully grab a table without waiting. 3. Start with some wings for the table. Super meaty, nicely smoked, these are the real, tender, fall-off-the-bone beauties at Mr. Bones. I like the Hot BBQ sauce; kinda wish they had straight up buffalo too. 4. I get the baby backs, that's just my thing since they don't have St. Louis ribs. You get a choice of two sides, and they're kinda small portions, but I'm there for the meat and beer, so no matter. The baked beans, cole slaw, potato salad and yams are all good. I'm not so into the rice. When you need one day off from the grouper sandwich, Mr. Bones is your man.

  • Ellen R.

really really delicious food. i got the pulled pork and coleslaw, both amazing. I went with 5 other people and everyone loved what they had too. the beer selection was ehh but they had some okay ones and you get up and get your own beer out of a coffin which is pretty sweet! the service was quick and I want to go back!! :-D

  • Jose A.

Best BBQ in Bradenton, the place is uniquely decorated and they have a huge coffin filled with ice cold beer waiting for you the minute you walk-in. Their ribs are excellent; they have 5 or 6 different house sauces to choose from (honey-glazed is my fave, but Mongolian and Mandarin are strong runner-ups). They also have an Indian dish on the menu, the Chicken Masala complete with coconut rice and mango and coriander chutneys, which are mouth-watering. I always order a side of their crawfish gumbo as an appetizer. While you wait for the food, you'll be entertained by the unique artwork and decorations.

Funky little place with some of the best baby-back ribs in town.

I just returned from spending a week's vacation on Anna Maria Island and had the opportunity to eat at Mr. Bones 3-4 times. I still LOVE the BBQ at Mr. Bones. The BBQ pork sandwich with beans and coleslaw is a great meal.

    (5)
  • Don W.

BBQ chicken great, loved the baby backs better than spare ribs, bread pudding good but different. If it's crowded go right to the register and put in your name, don't wait by the dining room.

  • Jenny S.

I came here with friends while on vacation last week and we all pretty much loved it. Its a cute little bbq place with cool decor- we stopped in because we saw the vegetarian sign out front and were also surprised to find Indian food on the menu. I had the thai noodles with peanut sauce and the curried rice, with a side of cucumber raita- and I'm still thinking about how good it was! Could have used a little more of the mango chutney which came on the side. I did not try the ribs or any of the bbq. Overall the service was good- would be a great place to try on a beach outing :)

  • Dean B.

Good Louisiana style ribs. Potato salad and baked beans good, too. Gumbo is authentic Cajun. The walls are covered with spooky Mar dis Gr as style masks. Cool place. Check out the skeleton water fountain, outstanding!

  • Eric G.

Be prepared to get yours fingers covered in BBQ sauce, the baby back ribs were superb, loads of meat and a tasty sauce. Good value for money, don't be put off by the surroundings which look a little basic, this is a gem of a restaurant

  • Mauren T.

Real food at real prices. Best burger on the Island! Delicious creamy cole slaw.

    (4)
  • Drew H.

Funky place on AMI. BBQ snobs beware, this isn't a true joint, but the ribs are tender and sauce is good even if neither have seen any smoke. Indian dishes are the real sleeper here. Nice staff, cold beers, fair prices and good vibe. Better than lots on the island. 3.5 out of 5 stars.

    (4)
  • erica p.

If we'd gone to Mr. Bones and only ordered the vegetarian fried rice or the biryani, I think I'd give this place three stars. But all the kitsch and good rice doesn't make up for lackluster bbq and tiny sides. Seriously - sides were tiny and seemed even smaller since they were served in plastic containers normally used for condiments. And most unfortunately, the brisket was dried out and tough. Good rices, decent tandoori chicken, bad traditional dishes...

  • Eileen P.

We loved it! Something exotic and different for everyone! Service was fantastic!

    (5)
  • George B.

Ah, Mr. Bones. My parents built me up so much, only to be horribly let down. They talked up how fantastic the ribs would be, but they turned out to be dry and tough. Yeah, sure, the potato salad was tasty, and the yams were delicious, but, beside the fact that the sides were sooo small, you don't go for the yams...you go for the ribs!!! At least that's what I was told. Sure, the place is "quaint" and has kitschy decor, but honestly, if I want to look at masks, I'll go to a museum. As for the staff, everyone was pleasant and helpful. Even some of the choices for ribs were interesting, like Mandarin or Mongolian style. However, that doesn't make up for the lack of decent food. I can only hope we were there on a bad night, but you know the way it goes when a place becomes popular...sometimes the kitchen just becomes lazy and serves up mediocre food banking on the rep.

I LOVE THIS PLACE! I need to get this off my chest, when you walk in they have beer specials on ice, take whatever you want and carry it to your table when you're seated. Oh, I forgot to mention, the beer is in a real coffin, that's just a beautiful thing! The walls are decorated in tribal death masks, the place reeks of the grim reaper. How's the food? Well, first, you'll notice there are no salt and pepper shakers on the table, only a note from the chefs reading "we take pride in expertly preparing our food, salt and pepper is available upon request". Pretty ballsy I thought. After gazing at the menu I ordered the pulled pork sandwich, sweet potato fries and I grabbed a local IPA from the coffin. What was delivered was pulled pork like nothing I ever saw before. First, it wasn't pulled, it looked more like it was chopped and diced, then run through a food processor. It was drenched in a sticky, gooey, BBQ sauce that smelled sickeningly sweet. It was so much pork that it was more like a sloppy joe rather than pulled pork. So I knife and forked it. The first bite was like a flavor bomb went off in my mouth, I tasted sweet, savory, vinegar, tomato, chipotle, garlic, pepper, smoke and way too many more flavors to describe. It was a deeply rich sauce that didn't cover the smokiness of the pork butt, but greatly enhanced the perfectly cooked protein. The sweet potato fries were served with a smokey ketchup that could have benefited with a few drops of lemon or a chipotle sauce to cut the sweetness of the fries. Also, they were soggy, from either sitting around too long or not being double fried. I know why the place has tribal death masks decorating the walls, if you ate here a lot, you'd have a heart attack from all the pork products. They also serve chicken and beef.

We had an unexpectedly large party of 14 who ended up at Mr Bones. Since ordering would be a nightmare we just asked the owner to bring the best dishes and ensure there was enough food. It was amazingly good. Try the beef fried rice and the mongolian wings for sure! Friendy and fast and delish!

Baby-Back honey glazed ribs were good.

This small place gets 3 starts for "kitschy" and "great waitress". The sign says "don't even ask for catsup, mustard, salt, or pepper, the food is perfectly cooked by a Louisiana chef" so I had high hopes that the condiments were unnecessary. In the foyer, there's a cooler full of bottled beers and they let you grab one from the ice on your way to your table. I ordered soda, which she had to bring out from the back and forgot to catch me for a refill. You pass a skeleton with his boney hand holding his-- well you know, it's a fountain making it look like he is peeing. You're seated in a room full of colorful weird masks. I was more interested in the menu which presents as gourmet with many options, but it appeared to be a "fun" place, too. I was disappointed with the food. The vegetarian rice (side dish size $4) was very bland, NO seasoning and had 3 slices of carrot and a couple teeny pieces of cauliflower and that was it.. I got 10 wings cooked "dry" with two sauces brought out on the side. They were very fatty and very fall off the bone at 80c each. I had to pull off the thick blubbery fatty skins after about 4 of them. The house bbq sauce was watery and bland, tasting more like catsup. The Mongolian "duck sauce" was better but not "write home to Mama" quality. Maybe they would've been better cooked in the stuff rather than dipped afterwards? They offered butter toasted bread on the side. I concluded this was probably really fine food for a buncha "beer drunks" but the sober guests expect more. I'll try a couple other things on the menu before writing the place off. They had some great photos of 46 desserts--decadent chocolate, key lime pie, apple pie, and those might be worth an emergency sweet stop in the future.

We've eaten there three times in the last four years. Love the baby back ribs. Ask for hot, which is not really spicy. Seems like family run business. Friendly servers. Many, many beers in a coffin. Also had watercress over curried rice - just OK. Key lime pie was great.

Favorite on the island for me this time. Lousiana BBQ. Delicious.

  • Patti A.

This is not gourmet dining. But it is tasty, fun and perfectly different from anyplace else. If that's not what you're into, then this isn't your place. But...if you like drinking many different brands of beer out of a coffin and eating finger licking ribs in a very cozy hole-in-the wall dining room, you'll like Mr. Bones. I'm a fan of the BBQ...tried both the ribs and the chicken. Really enjoyed the biryani but not as big a fan of the curried rice, but hey, I got another beer out of the coffin and had a great time with my friends. (We shared plates) Finished up in time to walk across the street for a beautiful sunset. I'm a fan, and it is a nice break from a week's worth of grouper sandwiches.

ok i understand it's not the best ribs...but this isn't exactly a foodie capital of the world. i go to anna maria island for a laid back vacay...and i go to mr. bones to drink beers out of a coffin, and sustain with some decent food with friends. perfect for that. i actually had a really good chicken tikka meal this past summer, with more than enough to eat for lunch the next day (very important when on vacation). so while it's advertised as a rib place, they're ok. similar to other not so great ribs at other restaurants. btw...if you want to drown your sorrows after your only okay ribs, the anchor inn next door is awesome, so you could always go there to throw back more beer, darts and it doesn't really matter the time...they serve alcohol at like 10AM...

  • M S.

I've been eating here ever since I was a kid, and I'm not sure if its me or if its the food, but it all tasted a lot better when I was 7. I want hot sauce, damn it! Mr. Bones, your spicy BBQ sauce just doesn't cut it. Its not even spicy! Plus your sides are cold, and I dislike the tiny plastic cups they come in; they are not environmentally friendly, and not to sound like a pig or anything, but I sort of want more than a forkful of cole slaw. Plus the yams last time were ice cold, damn it. I will continue coming here for nostalgia purposes and because I love picking out beer from a coffin, but when it comes down to it I want to kick that 'don't even ask' sign in its stupid, ugly face.

Absolutely stellar.... We did not get the ribs. Instead got rice dishes and chicken. A true taste bud treat.

If you are ever on the island, feed your beach bellies here and I promise you they won't disappoint. Definite muat have here are their ribs....succulent and tender. From asian inspired noodles as an appetizer to rich flavor jambalaya....these guys are on point. Kudos to the chef and team at this location....we dined fabously here and we will be back. Thanks guys, Foodie S.

Customer service is absent at this place, it felt as though this staff had worked here for a long time and had pretty much had enough with customers in general. Mac and Cheese is the Kraft skinny noodle stuff you can get at Walmart the ribs were subpar, the rice was horrible, waiter's style was passive aggressive. The beer was good though :-/ Never coming again, don't bother...

Food was really awesome - everyone in our group liked what we ordered except for 1 person (chicken fried rice was not good). The rest of us had shrimp & grits, Congo chicken, ribs, pulled pork, and quesadilla. Loved the coffin full of beer in the entry. Place is really really small. Potato salad and baked beans were the best of it all! Would have given it 5 stars if not for the funky fried rice and super small dining room. I'd definitely eat here again.

I have not been to Mr. Bones in over 8 years and nothing has changed and that's a good thing! Same old bamboo wall coverings, voodoo masks, coffin containing ice, beer and sodas and of course the Mr. Bones fountain. Even the waitresses are the same! Great ribs but I would recommend the baby backs instead of the pork ribs, they were a bit dry. The side dishes baked beans, coleslaw and fried rice were amazing. Waitresses are great and they check up on you every so often and refilled my ice tea several times.

This place is a great find in a sea of generic tourist type fish shacks. My husband, sister and BIL all had ribs and they all enjoyed different sides, candied yams, Bbq beans, cole slaw, etc. I had local mahi mahi with their special house rice (it's delicious) and some potato salad. They also had a great selection of beers, served out of a coffin! I looked at the plates on other guests tables... Everything looked and smelled wonderful.

My wife and I were on vacation on Anna Maria Island and we passed by Mr. Bones BBQ multiple times. Ummm...Yes! We entered and there is a huge casket of bottled beers waiting to say hello to you. I got a Kalik beer. Not a bad clean lager from the Bahamas. The menu was pretty extensive with a wide range of options. Chicken, pork, ribs, the whole gambit, plus they had a black bean burger which I would have gotten if it were not my first time. I got the pulled pork sandwich on the garlic bread. Amazing! The sauce is sweet. My wife asked me what the style was. She asked "It looked sweet." That is exactly what it was. The baked beans were drenched in sauce and the mesquite flavor was sweet and flavorful. My wife ordered some black beans and rice and really enjoyed them, while our super nice waiter checked on us often. Great BBQ on the 7 mile island.

I was here once nearly 10 years ago and it was mobbed so I opted to try midweek around 2:30 and that was a good choice if you want space. I had the burger, which was more memorable last time but it was still good. I hope to come back and try the dinner menu. It was HUGE. And the sides were FABULOUS!!! The cole slaw was sweet and creamy, the baked beans rich, thick and slightly sweet and the BBQ sauce was soooo good. I can't wait to go back and try some real BBQ dishes.

Our party of 7 visited Mr. Bones 3 times in 4 days, and we wish we had gone 4 since the other place we tried was a horrible experience. With vegans and meat eaters in the group, there was something for everyone and it was all so tasty. Great food, nice portions, reasonably priced, excellent service from Alec. We will definitely be back with every visit to Anna Maria Island. Oh and lots of craft beer!

All food should taste that amazing. Its fast its so good you can't stop eating the beer is cold and a great selection fun atmosphere would go back or even get take out

Solid BBQ and the only non-dive place in the area worth visiting. Decor is fun and ads a dark atmosphere with the dim lighting. In any other city, this place would be packed with hipsters. Huge portions. The potato salad is a must! The vegetarian dishes are in no way neglected - I'd recommend the Tamari Roasted Veg. The BBQ chicken was a generous size, moist and full of flavor. One of the few reasons I'd go back to Bradenton for a visit. I'd avoid the "snowbird" peak time as it's better to not have to wait - that really goes for any place in the area.

This might be one of the best meals I've had on the island. I love the eclectic menu & small, quaint spot. Funky vibe & beer coffin set a great tone right when you walk in. I'm obsessed with the biriyani rice! Perfect blend of spices & coconut (I've been searching for a good Indian dish around & found it here). Ribs were great, chicken kebabs & veggie tikka masala are so flavorful. Service was great, & the owner was super nice & welcoming. Will eat here more than I should!

They have a vegan menu and for whoever cares, a good selection of beers. The food was just OK. The service was so so. I would not bother going back.

The ribs themselves were good. They also have craft beer. When you order the ribs for $15.99 or $19.99, you'd think you're getting a rack. Or even a half rack. You'd be wrong. You get a pound. With spareribs that worked out to be four ribs. No fries. And the wait staff was kinda surly. I'm sorry I want another beer, ma'am.

We went with a large group ( 8 people) and the service was nice, they were accommodating and able to work with a larger group with kids. I did find it odd that they added gratuity, but did this by hand. We had the hot bbq, sweet bbq, and the regular. The regular was by far the best of the three, the sides where pretty average. It is pretty small but getting there at 530 we had no issue with getting a table

A couple weeks ago my wife was looking for a place for us to eat on the beach. Since I'm a vegan this makes our quest interesting. When the first place that popped up was a BBQ place we thought it was a joke. Sure enough, they have plenty of vegan options and there is even a separate PDF menu on their website. We walked in and grabbed a couple beers from the coffin and were immediately seated by a friendly hostess. My wife ordered a pulled pork sandwich and I ordered the black bean burger with a side of kimchi and a bowl black beans and rice. Everything was delicious. My wife loved her sandwich and my burger was amazing. The black beans and rice were a little on the spicy side, but the flavor was worth it. We will definitely be going back here.

This place doesn't disappoint! The atmosphere is very eclectic - and you realize that as soon as you walk in and see a "coffin" full of cold beer! I've been here a couple times and I usually end up getting the BBQ baby back ribs. The full rack is more than enough food! I've also tried the shrimp and grits which were killer (and I'm a self-appointed shrimp and grits snob). They have a great beer selection in that "coffin" and they tell you to pick one out to enjoy while you wait (if there is a wait) or just take it to your seat with you. Mr. Bones is a great choice if you're looking for some good cookin'!

One of the best meals I've had in awhile. The meat was barely hanging on the bone. All of the sides are scratch made. Everyone in our party enjoyed the meal. Highly recommend.

If you are on vacation and want to go out somewhere fun and exciting, something you can't get at home, this is not the place. The BBQ sauce is generic and not exciting, tastes just like a T.G.I Friday's BBQ sauce. There quesadilla's are boring and nothing to write home about. Most of their food I feel I could make at home and one up, and don't believe this is the place to spend your vacation dinner budget on. Everything was good, nothing was bad but just not great.

If ever in the Tampa/St Pete area you MUST visit Anna Maria island and eat at Mr. Bones BBQ. It is a New Orleans style restaurant and the food is very very good. I highly recommend. Plus there is a beer tub while waiting for your table!!!

Excellent food. We ordered the BBQ ribs and curry rice with chicken. The ribs came with rice and one other side, I picked cole slaw. I've never been a huge fan of cole slaw but it was amazing. And the rice was so great too. I can't say enough great things! Highly, highly recommend this place. Can't wait to go back and try the rest of the menu!

After a year had passed we went back to Mr Bones. We ordered our traditional Chicken Tikka. We are happy to report that Mr Bones has returned to their 4 star status. Don't get take out you get screwed on quality and quantity. Dining in is the only way here!!

  • Gina H.

The only reason I didn't give five stars is the dessert (key lime pie) was mediocre but the main dishes were amazing! When you walk in you can grab an ice cold beer from the coffin which is fun then into the eclectically decorated dining room to choose your meal which is tough because so many things look good. After much deliberation I chose the Congo Chicken and wow am I glad I did. If I could bottle that spicy peanut sauce up and take it home I would. My sides were candied yams (yum) and baked beans. My son chose the 1/2 rack of baby back ribs and said they were the best he's ever had. He polished them off even after starting with the Caesar salad which he also ate all of. We are bummed we found this on our last day of vacation or we'd be back tomorrow for sure!

March 2015 Atmosphere cute. Grab a beer from the coffin cute. $5 per beer- not so cute-even for a beach town. Food: good, portion size: good, they are arrogant about not having salt/pepper/condiments on the table. its a cost saving issue for them not a great tate issue as they proclaim. Put condiments on the table for your guests! Wait time obnixous ------- feel like a rockstar and take advantage of the call ahead priority seating. Service SLOW----definitely not worthy of the automatic 20% gratuity they add in.

It was the worst food I've had in a long time. The wings were dry. I will say that the honey BBQ sauce was good. Then I got the Caesar salad and it looked great but again the chicken was so dry I couldn't eat it. They say no salt or pepper but it needed that really bad. To top it off my service was just horrible . how do we sit down before a table and just get over looked to have our order taken. I will not be going back there again. Gave two stars just for the fact the only thing we ordered that was good are their ribs.

This is always our first stop on our annual AMI visit. Great food, service, and ice cold beer from a coffin. Wicked awesome ribs , as we say in Boston.

I'm not just bragging about MR BONES BBQ because Grandama Frost's Strawberry Shortcake is on the dessert menu; or because when I enjoy the candied sweet potatoes and cole slaw I'm wisked back to memories of family reunions in St. Joseph, MI at Grandma Connors and picnics at Silver Beach on Lake Michigan . . If you consider yourself a true smoked (not boiled) barbecue "aficionado" and can appreciate meat that slips off the bone of your baby-back ribs, you must add MR BONES to your bucket list. I've managed to be blessed in 50+ years of dining across the U.S. to have eaten BBQ at most of the "Mecca's" from Texas, New Orleans, Memphis, Chicago, even St. Louis and once you try BONES, you'll agree. MR BONES BBQ rightfully adds Anna Maria Island/Holmes Beach, Florida to the TOP-10 list of Best BBQs in America. Their true "magic" is once you've enjoyed your "Traditional" meal with sweet, tomato-based barbecue sauce, next visit crank-it-up a notch. This time try an order "outside-of-the-box" and experiment with a serving of chicken wings in their 'Mongolian BBQ' sauce or another of their exotic flavors, you'll be hooked! Don't stop there. If your children have lived all their lives and the ONLY version of "hamburger" they've ever known was from a drive-thru served in a styrofoam container, they really don't know what created the burger-franchise craze across America in the decades between the 1950's to '70's. Once you've had a hand-pattied fresh burger, served hot off the grill (not reheated in a microwave before handed out the drive-thru) then you'll remember why burgers tasted so good growing up when we were kids! Finally, what has earned their reputation as one of the BEST DINNERS in Manatee County over the past nearly 20 years is the owners God-given ability & success in hiring & training excellent wait-staff. If you've ever experienced exceptional service or been waited on by what I call a "professional sever" you know precisely what I mean. It's rare these days and surprising to find restaurants that attract or take the time to teach their wait-staff courteous, friendly service techniques. But just like the difference between the WalMart or Kmart employee who has received little or no instruction on professional manners or salesmanship, versus your shopping experience with a trained sales professional at a Saks Fifth Ave, Nieman-Marcus or similar level store, I have found the folks at BONES a throw-back to old-fashioned, friendly service, sadly a thing of the past, missing from most dining experiences these days. Don't let outside decoration fool you. With a name like BONES, yes there is a skeleton greeting you on the way to your table. And their Self-Serve beers are iced for display in a coffin, but once you see past the "theme" behind the logo, you'll be happy to have found one of the best meals in all of Tampa Bay on the Gulfcoast of Florida! "BONE" Apetite!

Food was ok, we were seated in the corner in the back. It was rather tight. We pointed out a circular table in the front and the seater said it was for bigger parties. No one sat there for the time we were dining. Menu looks good, but of the 3 people we dealt with, the server ranked 1st, of the 3 representing the establishment. If you have a child that only eats kid food it a good place, but the kid had a problem with the scary masks. If we were seated at the round table, less masks.

Been going to this part of Florida for vacation every year for the past 17 years. Each visit we go to Mr. Bones for ribs. They simply have some of the best ribs and we've been to many places across the country for ribs. The prices are reasonable, the service is fast and friendly. This week I tried the crawfish gumbo,.... OUTSTANDING!

Unique, lovely, casual mom & pop style joint. From what I've heard, the owners are a couple -- he's a southern dude, she's an Indian woman, and this is their brilliant idea: fusion of traditional southern BBQ & Indian spices... a true gem.

Incredible food, nice cozy place. The jambalaya - it wasn't AS GOOD as in New Orleans, it was BETTER. Were talking serious Cajun. Delicious BBQ, I've rarely been top a place agree buying the house sauce was so critical. Call ahead to get on the wait list!

  • Misty P.

Disappointingly mediocre...for barbecue, anyway. We are locals and FL natives, raised on Carolina style (sweet, fall off the bone) BBQ. If this is your style, you will not find it here. Save your $$ and head to Hickory Hollow in Ellenton or even Sonny's for the real deal. Bones has cute ambience, and the sides were decent, but not worth the $75 lunch tab. Waitress was visibly stressed and could give zero recommendations to first timers. The extra $10 for 1 kids milk and soda were the 'nail in the coffin', literally, for this family!

Delish for BBQ or vegetarian - what an odd combo! Great place to take your out of state guests when you get tired of seafood. Something for lots of tastes.

  • Bill T.

Just got some take out from here the other day. The ribs were awesome, we just got the standard BBQ spare ribs and they were tender and scrumptious. The curried rice was also very tasty. The pulled pork sandwich was just okay. Sweet potatoes were a little on the too sweet side, cole slaw was okay and potato salad was excellent. It is fun to eat here for the great beer selection but taking some with us down to the beach for lunch was fun too. If you are in the area, check it out.
